Social Program

Please see below for details of the social program. Registration is open, and the planned social events can be booked and paid for via the registration system. We have created a varied program of events, but hope that delegates will also socialize informally in small and large groups, exploring and enjoying Hiroshima together! Places can be booked on all social events for friends and family members as well as delegates themselves. Instructions can be found about booking extra tickets when registration opens.

The social events are being held at a range of venues, all within easy reach of the congress centre.

Thursday 12th July - GUIDED TOURS

On Thursday 12th July (the day before the congress starts) two guided tours are offered. One is a World Heritage guided tour of Hiroshima, and the other is a visit to a local school.

Elementary School Guided Tour

This guided walking tour will take place from 9.30 - 11.30 am, meeting at the International Conference Centre Hiroshoma at 9.30 am. Participants will have the opportunity to visit one of two local elementary schools. Accompanied by an English-speaking guide, you will have the opportunity to visit the school site, see their facilities and hear about therapy provision for pupils with communication difficulties. It is not yet clear whether participants will have the opportunity to observe a clinical session, but the schools concerned are seeking consent from staff, pupils and parents.

This tour is free and is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. It is most relevant for SLPs who work in elementary school settings.

World Heritage Guided Tour

This day-long tour (9 am - 4.30 pm) will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Tour participants will meet outside the International Conference Centre Hiroshima (the congress venue) and will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, before boarding a ferry to Miyajima Island, with its floating Itsukushima shrine. Lunch will be provided at a hotel on the island, followed by a short time exploring, and a demonstration of momiji manju cooking (momiji manju are traditional steamed buns, in the shape of Japanese maple leaves). Returning to Hiroshima on another ferry, followed by a street-car ride through the streets of Hiroshima, the tour will finish at the Atomic Bomb Dome, close to the Peace Memorial Park.

The fee for this tour is 10,300 yen per person (approximately $97 USD). Lunch is included. The tour will involve travel by foot, ferry and street car. Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have any questions or to discuss options if you use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking short-moderate distances.

This tour is limited to 40 places. If fewer than 15 participants purchase tickets, this tour will be cancelled and the fee will be fully refunded.
